The Three Bears House

To go along with our Fairy Tale unit and our lesson covering Goldilocks and The Three Bears students made The Three Bears house out of paper sacks and construction paper.

This one even has a flap door to open! :) Students were really creative!

Fairy Tale Unit-- Goldilocks and The Three Bears

Today we started a Fairy Tale unit. We began the unit by discussing the story elements found in a fairy tale. Here is the story element chart I made.

We will refer to our fairy tale story element chart each day that we read a new fairy tale.

I read Goldilocks and The Three Bears by James Marshall. We then completed a sequencing activity I found in a Mailbox book. Next, we tried oatmeal. Then we made a class graph. Students placed their bear above the yes if they liked oatmeal and no if they did not. Most everyone really enjoyed the oatmeal and was wanting seconds. However, they were a few who said it was GROSS! haha The bear pictures we used for our class graph were from a book called Teachin' Cheap. We then talked about the data collected and each student individually graphed and answered questions using our data. CLICK HERE for the individual graph.

Students then completed a story elements flap book. It didn't show up to clear in the picture. Students were suppose to cut and make five flaps. Flaps were labeled with characters, setting, problem, solution, and new ending. When they opened the flap they were to fill it out accordingly and then draw a picture.

All in all the lesson went pretty well and smoothly. I was evaluated during this lesson. The kids were rewarded with Popsicles for good behavior after the evaluation. I was so glad to have it out of the way. That was my last one for awhile! wahoo!!!

Stay tuned for more from my fairy tale unit. Happy hump day blog friends! It's almost Friday!!!!!

President's Day

This post is a little late but here are a few of the activities we did for President's Day.

We began by reading several books about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

We made George Washington. This idea was inspired by Cara Carroll at the First Grade Parade. I also used half a paper plate for the face like she did. However we did a different hat and did not paint our faces. Students colored the face, and drew on a mouth and nose. We used wiggly eyes and cotton balls for hair.

Students completed a writing activity that I found on Growing Kinders. Students wrote about what they would do if they were president. They had some really funny and cute responses. One said I "wood" tell the town what to do and drew himself at a podium! haha Another one said they would boss everyone around and in the book they drew they had a speech bubble coming from their math that said "gimme your money!" hahaha  Some students wanted to clean up the earth and help people. :)

Valentine's Day... and all of its glory!!

Yesterday was our first day back from dismissing early and missing two days for snow and we returned on Valentine's Day! Love was in the air..... There was candy of all sorts, cupcakes, cookies, chips, drinks, cards, flowers, stuffed animals you name it we had it! We began our day by trying to get caught up from missing. We had a reading test, spelling test, and then word wall test. We even read a story, cranked out a Saxon Phonics lesson and FINALLY, YES FINALLY (the kids were probably thinking)... we moved on to some fun Valentine's day stuff. We did some of the fun math actictivies that were posted on What The Teacher Wants. The kids LOVED it! Then students shared their February family projects with the class. They really got a kick out of whaooing, cheering, and clapping each other on. Then it was on to our party. We had tons to eat, exchanged cards, and attempted to watch Be My Valentine Charlie Brown. Key word here is attempted as the kids were toooooooo wound up to pay the television ANY attention! Finally it was the end of the day... well for the kids... I stayed and filled in for after school tutoring until 5. After work I picked up a pizza for me and my boys (and get this... they gave me the wrong pizza!! I walked out smelling onions and peppers which I totally don't do and I stopped dead in my tracks and went back) so after waiting there for them to remake my pizza because they apparently gave mine away, I was finally headed home to my boys. I was (in the words of Babbling Abby) 12 kinds of tired at this point! Toooo tired to even get online and check my email or blog about the day or blog stalk other blog friends when I got home. Now that was tired!!! So here we have it a Valentine post the next day! Oh well... better late than never!
My day started out pretty stressful and not so peachy with one thing after another not going exactly as planned......... But let me tell you folks it definitely turned around when I received some beautiful, unexpected flowers from Eric!!! I was (in the words of Babbling Abby) 12 kinds of excited at this point!!!!! It gave me a new wind... just enough to make it through the day! haha

Aren't they b-e-a-utiful!??? And nothing says I love you like some rainbow roses and a Hello Kitty balloon!! He's got me hook line and sinker! :)

Here are some pics from our Valentine math activities.....and a few of the boxes from the February family project. My camera was going dead so I didn't get to take pics of them all! :(

BEE My Valentine-- Bee Project

My mom helps me come up with a monthly craft for my hallway bulletin board. She gets an idea or some inspiration and then comes up with a pattern free hand. She cuts out all the pieces and puts them in zip lock bags for each of the kiddos and then they put the pieces together to complete the project. This month she came up with the cutest little bees. Here is a pic of this cutie patootie bee. :)

Isn't he just the cutest????

First Grade Funny... "I hope I get held back!"

So this afternoon we were making a "snazzy snack" and one of my little blonde cuties said "first grade is so much fun..... I hope I get held back!" bawhahaha Totally made my day! I wanted to just squeeze her little cheeks! As I say about my baby dog quite often.... I would love to sap him up with a buscuit... and in this case..sap her up with a biscuit! haha She completely turned my day around with her sweet, cute little comment. My kids had been waaaay wild today and I was really ready to hit the road jack. But thanks to that little cutie pie, I was recharged and ready for round two! haha

Meet The Teacher--- Linky Party!!

This morning when I got on the computer to do my usual "blog stalking" I found that Cara Carroll is having a link party!
I decided I wanted to be apart of the greatness!! So here goes.....
My name is Elisabeth. I am 25 years old and from Tennessee! I would like to say I'm a southern belle! :) I've definitely got a southern Tennessee twang accent! haha You might even say it was thick like molasses! This is my third year of teaching and I have taught first grade all three years. I couldn't imagine myself teaching any other grade. These first grade kiddos are right up my alley!!
I have a wonderful boyfriend named Eric and we have a baby dog son named Dexter. See my little family below! Aren't my boys cute??? I like to tell people that Dexter is just like his mama! Curly locks, spunky, and loves to love! :)

Dexter was "Super Dog" for Halloween. Superman has got nothing on Dexter dog!!
Below is us Summer 2010 in Puerto Vallarta. We love to travel! :)

I am currently working on my masters in Instructional Leadership. Boy oh boy.. has it been time consuming! I sure will be proud to get my pay raise!

Now for the Q & A

Q: What would you be doing if you weren’t a teacher?
A:  Well..... I think I might be scrappin' and when I say that I don't mean scrap booking! I mean scrappin'!! My best gal pal owns a recycling business. I worked there before I got my job as a first grade teacher. I loved it!! It was so exciting. And it was no telling what I would see from day to day.  I really love making things pretty... even though I don't have a creative bone in my body. I think in a different life I would be an interior designer or some sort of a coordinator.

Q: What are your hobbies?
A:  Gosh...... I don't know. I feel like as much time as I spend on the computer looking for ideas to use in my classroom that teaching is somewhat of a hobby. I love to travel, taking pictures, shopping for a good deal, and does watching soap operas count???

Q: When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  I think always said a doctor or a teacher... I don't quite have what it takes to be a doctor... oh and I always said actress when I was little playing MASH. Did anyone else ever play this in elementary school?

Q: What are your guilty pleasures?
A: The Young and the Restless, Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Atlanta, and Beverly Hills (LOVE that drama!) CHEESE (if you cut me open I swear I think I would bleed cheese!) blogs, sweet tea, anything sweet (cake, cookies, you name it!)

Q: What is your biggest fear?!
 A: Drowning because I can't swim :(.... snakes, mice

Q: When you’re on vacation, where do you like to go?
A: Anywhere tropical!! I love a good tan, warm weather, and flip flops!!!

Q: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
A:  Be happy and don't worry!

Q: What do you value most in others?
A:  Kindness

Q: If you could choose one of your personality traits to pass down to your kids, what would it be?
A: Definitely my sense of humor! I keep something going at my house constantly. I think I'm funny even if anyone else doesn't! haha

Q: If you could have lunch with anyone in the world….living or dead…who would it be?
A:  wow... gosh I don't know. Will Ferrell maybe? haha I think he is hilarious! I LOVE Stepbrothers and Talledega Nights. Both are classics!

Now tell us one random thing about yourself:
I am addicted to soaps... soap operas!!!! You name it I watch it! It is even so bad that I often google "spoilers!" weird, right?? like I should totally go out and get myself a life! who googles spoilers for soap operas!??? This ole girl right here?? Eric asks all the time why do you watch this garbage. Why? Well as a young child my baby sitter always watched them and I think that's what got me addicted. But the real reason is they are ALWAYS new!!!! Every day... a new one... well except on holidays and weekends. I even have the soap net! True story.....    But thankfully this new blog addiction has kicked somewhat of my soap habit. I still watch them... but google spoilers alot less.

If you want to join in on this fun go on over RIGHT NOW to Cara's wonderful site!!

Groundhog Day

Tomorrow is not only my dad's birthday but it is also Groundhog Day!! Today, I read the history of Groundhog Day and told the kids about Punxsutawney Phil. We then discussed what it meant to make a prediction. Students then completed an activity where they made a Groundhog Day prediction. Here is an example.
Tomorrow, I plan on reading the cute book "Groundhog Gets A Say" by Pamela Curtis Swallow.
I was originally going to have the kiddos make a groundhog "snazzy snack" using a banana, chocolate chips, and almond slices but I found a much tastier recipe on one of the blogs I am following, Mrs. Wheeler's Tidbits. So on Friday, we will be making groundhogs, but with Mrs. Wheeler's recipe instead. Hope everyone has a Happy Groundhog Day tomorrow!!! Here's to hoping spring is a hop, skip, and a jump around the corner!!!!!!! Flip flop weather is calling my name! :)

Penguin Fun

I wanted to do much more with Penguins this year but we have had so many snow days we didn't have as much time as I would have liked. I saw so many great activities that other teachers were doing in their classrooms. I will definitely have to remember these neat ideas so I can do them next year with my kiddos. We did do some activities though with penguins. Here are some of the books we read.

We also made words from the letters in "penguin." We discuessed the traits of a penguin and students completed a writing prompt activity where they imagined they had a penguin as a pet. Here are a few pics of completed pet penguins.

We make two "snazzy snacks" each month. We made a "Penguin Treat" to go along with our theme of penguins. Want to make your own penguin treat? Check out http://www.mswinston.com/ for the recipe!Photobucket
